Buffer

An electronic circuit that serves to prevent loading or degradation of a signal.

A buffer is used, for example, between a high-impedance source, such as a guitar, and a lower-impedance load, such as a 10K ohm line-in on a mixing console.

Without a buffer, the sound would be very muddy and lacking highs.
